The Weekly Puttdown 13-19/01/2020

The Weekly Puttdown

Welcome to the weekly Puttdown. A weekly run through off the major news from the major sports around the globe. Short and to the point, cutting through the drivel and not to be taken to seriously.

13-19/01/2020

NFL:
Well there we have it, Superbowl 54 will be contested between The Chiefs and the 49ers. The Cinderella story of the Titans came to and end and the Packers decided to play on the most difficult setting by not turning up until 27 down.

NBA and WNBA:
In a giant step forward in the WNBA, a new collective bargaining agreement was agreed to this week. The deal included a large pay rise and paid maternity leave. These are steps in the right direction as the popularity for the women’s game continues to grow. Oh and Lakers are still top of the West, Bucks still top of the East.

Football (Premier League unless otherwise stated):
This weekend we saw the save of the season from Bournemouth’s Steve Cook. It was just a shame that he is not a goalkeeper, thus resulting him being sent off and Norwich scoring any way. It’s up there with the most brain dead actions from the season, leaving his team down to 10 men with an hour to play and 1-0 down. Everyone still hates VAR.

MLB:
Oh gee what a week. Finally the punishment for the Houston Astros has come in (which you can read more about in: Houston Astros punished for 2017 sign stealing). Then Alex Cora is sacked by the Red Sox amid his involvement in the scandal. Not long after that, Carlos Beltran steps down as New York Mets manager before even managing a game! This is all before they have even been given their punishments!

Golf:
Tiger’s first tournament isn’t until next week so go on about your business until then. Lee Westwood won the 2020 Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship meaning he has now won a tournament in 4 different decades. I’m sure he was happy to be told this, not reminding him of his old age.

NHL:
Brad Marchand of the Boston Bruins made a bit of a fool of himself this week. In a shootout against the Philadelphia Flyers, Marchand skating up to take his penalty, completely whiffed on the puck, touching it oh so slightly, making it an official attempted and losing the game.

Honourable Mentions:
LSU won the College Football National Championship, mauling Clemson 42-25. Joe burrow in the game, secured himself as the large favourite to be picked first in the NFL draft. It does mean he will be joining the Cincinnati Bengals, which would make you think what has he done so wrong to deserve such a punishment.

Rugby’s Premiership relegated Saracens to the second tier of the English leagues for violating salary cap regulations. Saracens decided to be relegated then let an independent body look at their books. If that isn’t shady I don’t know what is.
