Orlando, Disney to host remainder of the NBA season

The Weekly Puttdown

The Puttdown is back, kind of. Sports are slowly getting back on their feet, one by one emerging from the ground like The Undertaker at Wrestlemania. In this edition of the Puttdown, we will bring you updates on the major sports leagues and how they are looking to start back up.

NBA:

31st July, mark the calendars. The NBA is pretty much ready, they have a start date and even better than that, a location. Games will be played at Florida’s Disney World Resort. 22 teams have been invited to play out the rest of the season and playoffs. The proposal was voted in with 29 votes to 1. The only team not voting in favour was the 9th placed Portland Trailblazers, stating that there were better ideas on the table.

Football (Premier League unless otherwise stated):

The Premier League will return on 17th June. The games will be played behind closed doors and will be played out until all 38 are played. There is brilliant news for fans, as the majority of games will be shown free-to-air. The German Bundesliga has been up and running for a few weeks now, it will be interesting to see how much attention fans of football show this league once the Premier League is back up and running.

MLB:

Whilst most other sports get their houses in order without any real issues, the MLB is currently on fire. The team owners and MLBPA aren’t even slightly close to an agreement.  The owners have put on the table a 50 game season including another salary cut going against an already agreed salary cut. The MLBPA proposed a 114 game season to start 30th June. With the date not far off, I can’t see that one happening. It’s looking less and less likely that the Houston Astros will have a chance to break the record for a hit-by-pitch. Hopefully next year they will be able to give it a run.

Golf:

The PGA Tour is set to restart this week with the Charles Schwab Challenge with 16 of the top 20 ranked players in the world in attendance. The first 4 tournaments will start without fans, it won't be long till we have shouts of ‘get in the hole’ blaring out of T.V’s. More importantly, what’s happening with the majors? The PGA Championship is scheduled for August 6th, with the US Open and Masters coming later in the year.

NHL:

A date hasn’t been set as of yet, however, the NHL is progressing rapidly towards resuming its season. This week players will be able to return to training facilities for voluntary workouts. The league has already announced its playoff format, which will be at some point in the summer. Every playoff series will be the best of 7 series based on seeding, and teams will be reseeded throughout the tournament.  There will be 24 teams to two hub cities, which are yet to be determined. The tournament will begin with a 16 team qualifying round made up of a best of 5 series and a round-robin series to determine the seeding of the top 4 teams in each conference. Yeah, a lot to get your head around.

With all the positive news coming from all of the different leagues (except the MLB, they need to have a stern word with themselves) it's looking like we will have a summer and second half of 2020 packed full of sports and entertainment.
