The Weekly Puttdown 27/1/2020-2/2/2020
The Weekly
Puttdown
Welcome to the weekly Puttdown. A weekly run-through of the
major news from the major sports around the globe. Short and to the point, cutting
through the drivel and not to be taken too seriously.
NFL:
Kansas City Chiefs are your Super Bowl 54 Champions. In
classic 2019-2020 Kansas style, they gave themselves a mountain to climb, going
behind again in the playoffs, 10 points down going into the fourth quarter,
only to surge back and take the win on the back of Patrick Mahomes MVP performance.
Lamar Jackson was named Unanimous MVP, only the second time this has ever
happened. This comes only a couple of years after being told he should be a
wide receiver by the so-called experts. It makes you think, doesn’t it?
NBA:
The NBA continued to mourn the loss of the legend Kobe
Bryant with tributes paid all across the league. The league made some changes
to the All-star format this year. Every quarter will be to play for with the
winning team winning money for their chosen charity. If this doesn’t at least
get the players to try I don’t know what will.
Football (Premier
League unless otherwise stated):
Liverpool continues to be miles ahead in the race for the
Premier League title. Should we just fast-forward to next season? Everybody still hates VAR. Norwich and
Watford continues to try their best to get relegated, Watford going 2-0 only to
lose 3-2 to ten men Everton. Norwich drew 0-0 leaving them 7 points behind 17th.
MLB:
Pitchers and catchers report this month! Not long now until
the Houston Astros attempt to break the record for hits by pitch, I can’t wait.
Golf:
Webb Simpson won the Waste Management Phoenix Open. The most
fun hole in golf, the 16th at the Phoenix Open, continued to live up to
its reputation. It only makes sense to bring more holes like this into
tournaments. Players love it, fans love it what could go wrong, have a whole
course like it!
NHL:
In the battle of Alberta, we got the chance to witness a fight between two goalies, which, was just fantastic, and in my opinion, needs
to happen more often.
Honourable
Mentions:
A big shock in rugby as France beat England in the first
round of the six nations. England looked like a shell of the team that got to
the World Cup final in Japan, only really turning up in the late stages of the second half, but little too late.
In tennis, Novak Djokovic won his Eight Australian Open and
Seventeen grand slams. Meanwhile in the Women’s,
Sofia Kenin won her maiden Grand Slam title at just the age of 21.
